Dior and Chanel on top in Italy

from Cosmetic News

According to market-research firm NPD Italy, the country’s perfumery market grew 3.1% last year. Selective brands (+3.5%) continue to outperform their mass counterparts (+0.4%), although the latter are making progress after a severe drop in sales in 2006 (–7.1%). “Groups like L’Oréal and Beiersdorf made a specific effort to reconquer the perfumery circuit,” NPD Italy beauty manager Sylvie Cagnoni tells CosmeticNews.

Also testament to the success of the prestige category in the Italian market last year was the strong growth in fine fragrance (+5.5%). “The constant progress made by the nationwide and regional chains, which now cover 50% of the market, could explain this favorable performance because their self-service format often gives them better sales in fragrance than in skincare,” Cagnoni adds. In brand rankings Dior remained on top, followed by Chanel, which took over the number-two position traditionally occupied by Lancôme. Looking forward, “ consumption forecasts for 2008 are not optimistic, but companies' investments could make the difference,” Cagnoni concludes.
